The Punchbowl Memorial

After church, we went to the Punchbowl Memorial National Cemetery. It was established in 1948 to recognize those in the American Armed Forces who fell in the attack on Pearl Harbor. Also honored are those who perished in Korea, Vietnam, & WWII. The Punchbowl Crater is also known as Pu'owaina Crater, which means "Hill of Sacrifice".

Pa looking through the many walls with the approximately 30,000 inscribed names of the fallen. These walls are called "Courts of the Missing" and are on either side of the stairway that ascends to Lady Columbia.

Recognize any names?

Karlee standing in front of "Lady Columbia" who symbolizes all grieving mothers. The inscription is a quote by President Lincoln and reads: "...The solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom."
